Obamagelicals

Nov 12th, 2008 | By Skye Jethani | Category: Faith, Features, Politics

The exit polls has been analyzed and the evidence is clear. Evangelicals may have tipped it in for Bush in 2004, but Obama made significant gains among them in 2008. Now being called “Obamagelicals,” they are a sign that the Religious Right is eroding and a more moderate Christian voting block is emerging–one that neither party has in its pocket. The Obama campaign made a strong push to appeal to religious voters, and not just Christians. Obama made gains among Jews as well when compared to Kerry in 2004. From The New York Times:

Mr. Obama doubled his support among young white evangelicals (those ages 18 to 29) compared with Mr. Kerry. The increase was almost the same for white evangelicals ages 30 to 44. “There is definitely a generational…

Yes, I Look Like a Terrorist

Nov 12th, 2008 | By Skye Jethani | Category: Culture, Features

The following email just came in from a reader of Leadership:

Dear Mr. Skye:

Have you considered the value of first impression…it is as researched as anything in psychology and marketing and any other related discipline.

As much as you may not like to hear it, you look like the often maligned individuals associated with terrorism. If you would just wear a mustache it would not any where near the impact of that first impression.

Sorry, but as much as things can be superficial and argued in that direction, the fact remains that your appearance undermines the impact of what you write. In your…

What Was MLK’s Dream?

Amazing.

How else can you describe what happened last night when Barack Obama became the first African American elected President of the United States? The internet is saturated with essays documenting the magnitude of this event, but it’s the images of people cheering, crying, and celebrating throughout the world that really capture the emotion of it all.

Amid the reflection there have been numerous references to Martin Luther King Jr.’s pioneering civil rights movement and his “dream.” One commentator on the news last night said the day King delivered his famous speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial he could not have known that a two year old boy in Hawaii would become the fulfillment of his prophecy.

I’ve been fascinated by Martin Luther King since seminary–not just as a civil right leader,…

“No God” on British Buses

Nov 3rd, 2008 | By Skye Jethani | Category: Culture, Features

Athiests in the UK have raised money to purchase ad space on buses that read “There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.” 30 buses in Birmingham, Manchester, and Edinburgh will carry the signs for four weeks.

The athiests, part of the British Humanist Association (BHA) are supported by Professor Richard Dawkins- well known for his best-selling books, The God Delusion and God is Not Great. Dawkins says, “Religion is accustomed to getting a free ride-automatic tax credits, unearned respect and the right not to be offended, the right to brainwash children. Even on buses, nobody thinks twice when they see a religious slogans plastered across the side. This campaign to put alternative slogans on London buses will make people think- and thinking is anathema to religion.”

Here’s my question: In…
